What is the Renewable Energy Target?

The Renewable Energy Target is an Australian Federal Government scheme designed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in the electricity sector and encourage the additional generation of electricity from sustainable and renewable sources. The Large-scale Renewable Energy Scheme creates a financial incentive for the establishment and growth of renewable energy power stations, such as wind and solar farms, or hydro-electric power stations.

What is an ‘LGC’?

LGCs or Large-scale Generation Certificates are created for every 1000 kWh of eligible electricity generated from a power station’s renewable energy sources.

LGCs are then traded to companies to surrender towards their liabilities under the Commonwealth Government’s Renewable Energy Target.

How does GreenPower work?

As an accredited GreenPower Provider, Next Business Energy purchases accredited GreenPower LGCs for the % of electricity usage you nominate. We charge you for Next GreenPower at your nominated %, and then we buy GreenPower accredited LGCs to match your electricity usage with renewable electricity and reduce your carbon emissions, for the amount you nominate.

Each year an independent auditor confirms that Next Business Energy has purchased and surrendered GreenPower certificates, for your Next GreenPower purchases. This helps transition the way we generate electricity in Australia to more renewable sources of generation such as solar and wind and reduce greenhouse gas emissions permanently.

The NSW Office of Energy and Climate Change acts as the national GreenPower Program Manager on behalf of the National GreenPower Steering Group.

Next GreenPower, the Renewable Energy Target and meeting your carbon reduction goals.  

Each year Next Business energy must purchase and surrender LGC’s to meet our obligations under the Commonwealth’s Renewable Energy Target. Each year the Clean Energy Regulator sets the Renewable Power Percentage (RPP) which determines how many LGCs Next Business Energy must surrender to meet the target. In 2023 the RPP has been set at 18.96%. This means that in 2023, every electricity retailer has to purchase and surrender the equivalent of 18.96% of each customer’s electricity usage with renewable electricity. Customers reporting emissions under the GHG Protocol’s market-based emissions reporting framework are able to count the RPP toward their emission reductions.

Next GreenPower can then be used to reach the balance of a business’s carbon offset or emissions goal.
